Pramoedya Ananta Toer

Pramoedya Ananta Toer (1925-2006) was the author of novels, short stories, essays, and historical works spanning the colonial period and documenting Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Born on the island of Java, he became an anti-colonial activist and was imprisoned by the Dutch government from 1947 to 1949 and by the Suharto regime from 1965 to 1979. He was the recipient of the PEN Freedom to Write Award and the Ramon Magsaysay Award.
