Collection: John Burningham

John Burningham (1936–2019) was an author and illustrator of picture books for young children. He was a two-time winner of the Kate Greenawat Medal for his 1963 debut as an illustrator, Borka, and his 1970 classic Mr. Gumpy's Outing, which also won a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. He was a finalist for the Hans Christian Andersen Award and was the illustrator for the original Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang series. He contributed illustrations to over sixty books across his career. Burningham was married to Helen Oxenbury, who illustrated, among other titles, Michael Wayne Rosen's famous We're Going on a Bear Hunt.
