Sonya Walger's debut novel Lion (New York Review Books) has been shortlisted for the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction, an annual award celebrating creativity and excellence in fiction by women and non-binary writers in the United States and Canada.
“With a mastery of skill, a deft hand, and a brilliant grasp of everything dark and aching that moves us, Sonya Walger has delivered a book that reaches in and yanks out the beating heart of family... an unforgettable look inside a tumultuous relationship and the extraordinary echoes we produce with the most ordinary of words, both those we hold onto and those left unsaid.” — Jury Citation, 2026 Carol Shields Prize
The winner of the $150,000 Carol Shields Prize for Fiction will be named on June 2 at a ceremony in Toronto.
