Psychoanalyst and New School for Social Research professor Jamieson Webster joins novelist Tom McCarthy, recipient of the Believer Book Award and the Windham-Campbell Prize for Fiction, at 192 Books for a discussion and celebration of his latest book, The Threshold and the Ledger, out September 2025 from Notting Hill Editions, a NYRB distributed press.
In The Threshold and the Ledger, McCarthy unpacks a single poem by Ingeborg Bachmann poem, latching onto two of its central terms — the eponymous threshold and ledger — and takes off on a line of flight: through the work of Franz Kafka, David Lynch, Anne Carson, Sappho and Shakespeare.
This event will take place in-person. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served. Books will be available for sale after the conversation.
