Goethe-Institut New York will host a conversation between translator Sophie Duvernoy and New School professor of culture and media Noah Isenberg on Gabriele Tergit and her masterpiece, Effingers. Woefully underrated when it first appeared in 1951, and only recently rediscovered in its native Germany, Effingers will be reissued this November by NYRB Classics in a new translation by Duvernoy.
Full of parties and drama and delicious gossip, and featuring a kaleidoscopic cast of characters, Effingers is a keenly observed account of German Jewish life in all its richness and complexity.
This event is free and open to the public. RSVP here.
