Join Simon Critchley and Caroline Bynum at Book Culture for a reading and discussion of Critchley's latest book, Mysticism, a New York Review Books original out this October.
In Mysticism, Critchley begins with the famous mystics of yore, finding models for the good life in Julian of Norwich, Margery Kempe, Teresa of Ávila, and Marie of the Incarnation. Mysticism is not only in faith, he argues, but is part of literature and pop and punk music and everyday dialogue—any moment when the mind surrenders itself to ecstasy.
Caroline Bynum is professor emerita of Medieval European History at the Institute for Advanced Study and University Professor emerita at Columbia University. She is the author of Holy Feast and Holy Fast, The Resurrection of the Body in Western Christendom, Christian Materiality, and Dissimilar Similitudes.
This event takes place in-person at the 112th Street location of Book Culture. Please register for the event.
