JFL Colorado returns to Boulder this year, September 13-15, with featured speaker Douglas J. Penick. The Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) is a literary festival based in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, with satellite festivals around the world, including an annual Boulder, CO edition of the festival. On the final day of the festival, Penick, in conversation with Namita Gokhale, will discuss his forthcoming book The Oceans of Cruelty: Twenty-Five Tales of a Corpse-Spiritout this October from NYRB Classics.

The Oceans of Cruelty is Penick's retelling of the Hindi Baitâl Pachchisi and a look at the primordial, murky depths of stories—why we tell them, how they fit (or fail to fit) into our worlds, their hallucinatory power, even their more sinister capacity to capture and imprison. Dating back several thousand years, these twenty-five stories are some of the oldest in existence.

JLF Colorado will take place in-person. Admission to all scheduled sessions is free. Various ticket package tiers are also available according to donation level.
